The New Del Norte High School

 

I drove by Montgomery and San Mateo earlier this week and noticed that my alma mater, Del Norte High School, is getting a face lift . . . and by “face lift” I mean that an entirely new school is being constructed to replace the 50 year old building that I called High School – talk about an epic mid-life crisis. It turns out that in recent years Del Norte has experienced problems persuading students to become Knights. To combat the attendance problems Del Norte is undergoing a $26 million “make-over” to attract new students with state of the art facilities – offering prospective student programs geared towards computer programming and networking.

I’m not surprised by the reconstruction – if anything I’m surprised that Del Norte still exits. As a Freshman 1/4 of my class was redistricted to Rio Rancho High School. Whispers have circulated since my Freshman year that Del Norte was doomed for demolition. By the time I was a Senior the whispers had transformed into screams – I graduated in 2000. Soon after I graduated Del Norte was reclassified from a 5A to 4A High School. The end seemed near. The final curtain appeared to be lowering on Del Norte. It turns out that what appeared to be the final pages in Del Norte’s story were simply the beginning of a new chapter. From the look of the new building Del Norte is back and more attractive than ever.

Anyone that tells you that high school is the greatest time of your life is either Al Bundy, or overly sentimental. Nevertheless, I had a great time at Del Norte, and the class of 2000 was an amazing class. I’m proud to see that Del Norte is alive and is still the most attractive high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
